Dr. Bota will continue to serve as an associate professor for Neurology and as medical director for the neuro-oncology program at the School of Medicine. Dr. Bota is responsible for overseeing the development of clinical research and the new clinical trials business, guiding the development and implementation of this important initiative. Her proven leadership and passion for research inspires those around her and will be a great asset in achieving our collaborative vision for the future of clinical trials at UCI.

Bruce AlbalaBruce Albala, PhD

Professor Albala joined the UCI School of Medicine after 35 years of conducting clinical trials in the private sector. He has served as a principal investigator (PI) or sub-investigator on numerous clinical trials; he owned and operated a 36-bed, Phase I clinical trial inpatient unit; and he served as vice president and head of Clinical Technologies Associates, a specialty contract research organization (CRO).

Albala has over 22 years experience in the clinical research and development arm of a number of pharmaceutical companies including those in the US (Ayerst Labs, Division of American Home Products now part of Pfizer), Britain (Medeva PLC now part of UCB), and Japan (Shionogi and Eisai, Inc.). Most recently, he served for more than nine years as executive director and international project team leader (IPTL) for Eisai, Inc.

Albala has provided consulting services on clinical trial design and interpretation as well as regulatory strategy for both pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and holds patents on implantable medical devices and clinical research monitoring tools.

Beverly AlgerBeverly Lo Alger, MD, CCRP, CHRC
Director of Clinical Research Operations

Dr. Alger joins us from Gilead Sciences, Inc., where she served as regulatory compliance global lead for the Americas and Asia. In this capacity, she was responsible for regulatory compliance and quality oversight worldwide for research and development groups conducting preclinical and clinical research, and pharmacovigilance activities for both investigational and post-approval products. Prior to Gilead Sciences, Dr. Alger served as director of compliance for the City of Hope National Medical Center. She also previously served as the research compliance officer for UCI Health Medical Center.
